SPARK is a summer program hosted by the Vergnano Institute for Inclusion at UConn, designed to introduce students to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) through hands-on activities, mentorship, and engagement with professionals in the field.
Must be a current 5th – 7th grade female student during the school year (rising 6-8th graders). Applicants who are not in the grade range but are interested in the program are encouraged to apply to be placed on the waiting list
The SPARK Program takes place at the University of Connecticut, Storrs campus. Participants have the opportunity to experience college life by staying in residence halls.

Yes, there is a program fee that covers housing, meals, and materials. Limited scholarships are available for eligible students. Students will engage in hands-on STEM activities, attend workshops, participate in group projects, and hear from guest speakers. The program also includes team-building exercises and opportunities to explore UConn’s campus.
SPARK is primarily a residential program, meaning students stay on campus for the duration of the session. However, commuter options for day campers may be available depending on the session.
For residential students, activities typically run from 8:30 AM – 8:00 PM. Commuter students should arrive by 9:00 AM and be picked up by 5:00 PM. A detailed schedule will be provided upon acceptance.
A packing list will be sent to accepted students, but essentials include comfortable clothing, toiletries, closed-toe shoes, and any necessary medications.
Students stay in UConn’s residence halls with roommates. Trained counselors and staff supervise students at all times.
Yes, all meals are included. Students will eat in UConn’s dining halls, which offer a variety of meal options, including accommodations for dietary restrictions.
SPARK participants are supervised by trained counselors, UConn faculty, and staff members.
Trained staff members are available to assist in case of an emergency. UConn’s Student Health Services is accessible for medical concerns.
Yes, students may bring their phones, but they must be used responsibly and should not interfere with program activities.
Parents are encouraged to attend the opening and closing sessions. Other visits are discouraged to ensure a full immersive experience for students.
