About Inclusive JET
Inclusive Excellence Program for Faculty and Staff:
Justice, Equity, and Transformation (JET)
JET is a customizable, community-based experience designed to walk with faculty in a
shared commitment toward anti-racist and inclusive practices in the School of Engineering.
This year-long journey scaffolds for self reflection, individual action, and collective action to:
- Examine behaviors, biases and beliefs that feed the system of racism and inequity.
- Ground teaching, research and service in anti-racist and anti-discriminatory practices
- Actively change policies and practices that allow racism and discrimination to thrive in higher education.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
JET stands for Justice, Equity and Transformation.
Signup is simple! Please fill out the form and we will reach out to talk more about your interest in the program!
No! We are looking for faculty and staff who are intrinsically motivated to grow as teachers and leaders.
The commitment is significant, but the reward is far greater. The program runs the length of the academic year, with weekly meetings and project work. You are not on this journey alone! Participants have access to VII staff to build a foundation in anti-racist and anti-discriminatory practice, as well as mentors in the program and in their home department to create a community of support along the way.
Individual action reflects personal goals within yourself, your classroom, and/or your department to make change. This could be an idea you’ve thought about to enhance your curriculum with more diverse examples, a goal to educate yourself on anti-racist pedagogy, or start a DEIJ committee in your department. It is as individualized as you are!
Collective action is an agreed upon project within your cohort to address systemic racism and discrimination at UConn. As a group you will discuss, co-create and implement your chosen action to dismantle and begin to rebuild new culture of inclusion and belonging for all students, faculty and staff.
We hope so! Please refer to your department’s guidelines regarding SET+. Our goal is that your project can be added to your PTR packet to demonstrate your effort to go above and beyond in teaching. We are happy to speak to your department head or the PTR committee if they would like more information about individual action plans and how they might be used for SET+.
This program is not meant to replace any department or group’s current anti-racist effort! Each department has different needs, and thereby different areas for growth and support. The open structure of the program can provide a space for collaboration and the free exchange of ideas and resources.
That’s ok! We understand that this commitment is in addition to your teaching load and committee assignments in your department. We are grateful for the time you can dedicate to the program. If you miss a session, you are welcome to catch up over coffee with VII staff or other members of the cohort.
Yes! Apart from contributing to building anti-racist communities within the School of Engineering, there are additional incentives including (1) financial support for your time developing anti-racist initiatives, (2) recognition and transparency to the community that you are committed to the work, (3) consideration in tenure, promotional, and/or annual review packages.
